Hey, all two people who read this! Yet another newbie and wannabe here, hope you don't mind too much. I am from Opp, AL (and nope, not down with O.P.P., never heard of it ) yet I live in the FROZEN, ARCTIC HADES that is Minneapolis, MN- woohoo!!! I'm only here 'cause Uncle Sam told my hubby and me that this was to be our new abode for a few years, I have yet to figure out why anyone would voluntarily make this their permanent home! (you can't beat the summer and fall here, though- I gotta give them that!) Anyway, I was a nurse in my former life (before children), and now I'm re-entering the work force. This, coinciding with my 29th birthday, has really made me re-think what exactly it is that I want to do for the next oh, say, 40 years or so. I've always loved the gross anatomy aspect of nursing (pun totally intended), but I have one small problem: I don't enjoy inflicting pain upon people. That, unfortunately, is a huge part of my job! Growing up, I always wanted to be a forensic pathologist... but in the teeny town I grew up in, there were only a couple of funeral homes- both family owned an operated. Since I was not part of said family, even sitting in on an embalming was a no-go for me. (I wanted to see if I could handle it before I started school) So much for helping people after they've passed! So I thought I'd do something as close as possible, (although there really is nothing close, is there?) : hospice care. I love hospice, but it gets rough constantly saying goodbye to people. And like I said, I just don't care for giving shots, starting IVs, debriding wounds, and such- not on live folks, anyway. I still want to be of service to my community, and have been turning the idea of Funeral Director over and over in my little blonde brain for a year now. There are a million reasons why, and I've come to my decision, and I hope to start this fall! (I say hope, as I submitted my FAFSA yesterday, and now I've gotta find) a school who'll take me!) It's nice I've stumbled upon this site- I honestly didn't know this kind of networking existed, and it is so nice to hear from people in the biz! After killing 3 days reading all AND I MEAN ALL of Doc J's and everyone's posts in "Tales from the CT Crypt," I knew I had to register!
So who knows. I may love school and find I excel at it, I may see my first horrific accident and not be able to handle it. (although I've seen some gruesome shiz and believe I have the stomach, only the first experience can tell... I mean, I've never seen anyone peeled off a couch, Doc J!) I do hope to at least make a few friends here, see a few more awesome stories, and have a nice, dark place to feel welcome.
That was way too long. Sorry.

| One thing that will definitely help you with school is to learn to use the enter key, trying to read what you just typed strained my eyes.... |

Thanks so much for the warm welcome, everyone! Grasshopper, I hope I don't become too much of a pain in your @$$, 'cause I'm gonna be asking you a few questions about school... if you don't mind!
I'm sorry if my post subjected anyone's eyes to any torture/strain/continuous squinting. My post shows up the same font and everything as everyone else's posts, so I'm not sure where the pain comes in. Just too long of a paragraph? Well sue me, I yak a lot! Should I double-space?
Thank you again for the awesome welcome. Y'all really make a gal feel right at home _________________ "Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation." ~George Bernard Shaw~ |

haha.... no, it's cool. I can help only a little though. The person who really prepped me for school is Doc-J because i work at the same home as he does and all of the embalming and law stuff he taught me. So if I can't answer anything, you read all of his post so you know he can tell you. _________________ ~Revenge is a much more punctual paymaster than gratitude ~ Charles Caleb Colton |

Lady--After reading your intro I feel you won't have a bit of trouble geting into the profession. It can be quite rewarding...it just takes
time. Just believe in yourself. That's all you have to do.
